U-SAVE – Urban Smart Aerial Vehicles for EmergenciesU-SAVE

Context and Objectives

The European U-SAVE (Urban Smart Aerial Vehicles for Emergencies) project develops and demonstrates an innovative system based on unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) powered by electric or hydrogen energy, aimed at
improving urban mobility and emergency response.

Its purpose is to reduce response times in critical situations, optimise traffic management and increase the safety and efficiency of emergency services in urban environments. Furthermore, it contributes to the promotion of sustainable urban air mobility, in line with European decarbonisation and energy transition policies.

The project is part of the strategic priorities of EIT Urban Mobility, within the objectives of deploying safe, green and inclusive mobility solutions and accelerating their arrival on the market.

Expected or Achieved Results

U-SAVE is structured in phases combining technological development with real-world validation. Two operational demonstrators of electric and hybrid drones are being designed and tested to evaluate performance in emergency
operations, such as accidents, natural disasters, or urgent medical assistance.

An integrated management and simulation system will coordinate aerial missions in real time, optimizing vehicle use while ensuring compliance with EASA safety, environmental, and aviation regulations, as well as AESA in Spain.

A business and commercialization plan will support economic viability and facilitate future deployment in European cities, creating new jobs and opportunities for tech companies and aerial service operators.

The experimental work will be complemented by simulations that will reduce physical testing, shorten development times and minimise material waste. The initiative seeks to generate a new business model within the field of urban air mobility, promoting the creation of skilled jobs and new opportunities for technology companies and air service operators.

Impact and Benefits

Electric and hydrogen-powered drones reduce emissions and energy consumption compared to traditional emergency vehicles, contributing to cleaner, safer cities. Automation and intelligent operation management enhance
urban resilience and crisis response capacity. U-SAVE also promotes social acceptance and institutional cooperation, involving municipalities, local authorities, and citizens in demonstrations and communication actions.

Founded in 2007, AERA was the first sectoral cluster established in Aragon. It is a non-profit association that brings together companies and public and private entities linked to the Aragonese aeronautical, aerospace, and defense industries, as well as centers for knowledge generation and transfer.
